In the late 1600s, Caleb grew up enslaved in the home of a governor of a small island in the Caribbean. He escapes this life only to find himself on the crew of a pirate ship that gets cursed by a mysterious entity who claims to be the Grim Reaper.

Caleb must put together his own crew, which includes an inexperienced voodoo practitioner, a former privateer, and a number of social outcasts, to find a ritual that will end his curse and stop the Reaper from coming to put his claim on the land of the living.
